Indesign CS5 fails to export to PDF

This seems to be a bug with the ”Background Tasks” function that was introduced in CS5.

If you open the Windows > Utilities > Background Tasks window then Export to PDF you can watch a progress bar. At some point the export fails, and you get the message “Failed. See alert”. But the Alert window below is blank.

The idea behind exporting as a Background Task was that you could continue to work in Indesign while it created the PDF (in Indesign CS4 and before you had to wait while the program finished creating the PDF before you could do anything else). This would be great if it worked, but as it doesn’t the solution is to disable the Background Tasks function and go back to exporting to PDF in the “foreground”…

Solution

Mac OS:
1) Create an empty text file and save it with the name “DisableAsyncExports.txt”
2) Control+Click on the Adobe InDesign CS5.app file in your Applications folder and choose Show Package Contents
3) Move the text file from step 1 into Contents/MacOS/ so the full path to the file is now:
/Applications/Adobe InDesign CS5/Adobe InDesign CS5.app/Contents/MacOS/DisableAsyncExports.txt

Windows
1) Create an empty text file and save it with the name “DisableAsyncExports.txt”
2) Move the text file from step 1 into the application folder, for example: C:\Program Files\Adobe\Adobe InDesign CS5\DisableAsyncExports.txt
